In Kyoto, there's Carpe Diem, Nanige, WBJJ, K-MASL, Groundcore, and Miburo (which has a new-ish BJJ-only gym close to Kyoto Uni in addition to their main gym). You could also try dropping into the Kyoto Uni judo club, which focuses on newaza, Kosen/Nanatei-style. source, 2025 ↗

There’s a good shop for MMA gear (including BJJ gis) called Grit Fight Shop in Tokyo. Decent selection of gis including the Bull Terrier brand which I have found to be light, durable and affordable. Owner speaks reasonably good English and is friendly, buying stuff there is a breeze. For gyms, I would recommend carpe diem in Tokyo. source, 2025 ↗

Reversal has a spot in Shinjuku. Their rashguards are top notch. Make sure to size up; I wear M but dude working there recommended XL for me, which fits like an M. I dropped in at Carpe Diem Aoyama and have only great things to say about it. Super chill team that rolls hard. source, 2025 ↗

Max BJJ is two stops from Asakusabashi. I only dropped in once for a seminar with the Mendes brothers years ago so don't have a lot of detailed info about it but they're a lot closer than Carpe Diem. Although it seems like they've changed their name to Royce Gracie Academy Tokyo [https://roycegracie.tokyo/english/](https://roycegracie.tokyo/english/) source, 2024 ↗

I’d also recommend the Carpe Diem gyms as others have. Very friendly coaches / training partners and as others have said also very likely to be able to accommodate foreigners / non-Japanese speakers. Definitely contact at least a day or so before as others have mentioned though. It’s just proper etiquette and expected. source, 2023 ↗
