In the US, under two of the Judo Orgs, it is technically possible to make **Shodan** **in 4** years, with excellent attendance. There are ways for people to reach Shodan *even faster* (if they win a lot of competitions, especially at the national and international level against ranks higher than their own). **That said, I have never seen a hobbyist make Shodan in 4 years, even if they never missed a practice.** I have never seen or heard of anyone other than Olympic prospects, D1 wrestlers with previous childhood Judo experience, or BJJ Black Belts with significant standing grappling experi source, 2022 ↗

I'm a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I had been watching MMA for a long time (I'd guess since the late 1990s/early 2000s) and my cousin invited me to a gym he had been attending. I loved the atmosphere and I became great friends with everyone there. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was and still is my favorite style to watch, so that's the style I chose to practice. After a few years of training I advanced through the rankings. However, a mixture of moving back-and-forth between Washington DC and Tennessee, attempting to find a suitable occupation, and pursuing a Master's degree in Evolutionary Biolo source, 2015 ↗
