Preparing for the downvotes, but why post this? Proof bjj works? It's three guys including a black belt holding down a hobo. Also, the jokes on his socks, shoes or potential diseases actually stink more than he ever could. Making fun of people beaten up by life isn't what I hoped from our community. source, 2026 ↗

I don’t live in Auckland but I regularly go up and train at some of the gyms there and have mates at a lot of gyms. Auckland is absolutely spoilt for choice with great gyms so it’s more trying to figure out if you want to do gi or no gi and deciding if certain gyms have the culture that suits you. The main ones I’ve trained at are -Soriso is an insane gi gym, some amazing high guys and girls out of there. -Tukaha is the largest and therefore has the most black belts, this probably won’t matter to you as you will be in the beginner classes but the size of there gyms is awesome and gives source, 2023 ↗

Check out the Instagram page for daredevil jiu-jitsu in Auckland, New Zealand. One of the trainers is a completely blind black belt. Very inspirational. source, 2023 ↗

Sure! For Karate I would recommend any of the JKS/JKA clubs across Auckland. They practice a fairly traditional Shotokan style. Then for Jiu Jitsu I would recommend Syzygy if you’re on the Shore, Sorriso if you’re Central, and Daredevil if you’re out west. All of these clubs are friendly and approachable for beginners with no commitment trial classes. Have fun! source, 2022 ↗

You can definitely train both disciplines at once, do not let your kickboxing go downhill while you only learn bjj. Maintain the kickboxing while going heavier into the jiu jitsu. You don't need to be a black belt rubber guard master to start competing in MMA either, just have the ability to get back to your feet with some decent ground / td defense. source, 2020 ↗

If ever you find yourself in Auckland in the North Island, roll through to DS Team BJJ in Newton which is 5 minutes from the central city. Recently we've had Clark Gracie fly in to do a seminar, and we've just become a Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu affiliate. Xande is actually in the country right now and just held an amazing seminar last night, he'll be at classes all week too. We're mostly a Gi oriented school, however No Gi classes are on Monday nights, and feel free to roll No Gi at Open Mats which are on Friday evenings, Saturday Noon or Sunday evenings.
