Funny thing is, go to Virginia or San Diego. Go to a Bjj place or something frequented by the active military guys. None of them act that way. Not a one. team guy? Don’t matter, sweetest fucking people on the planet. I go to worlds and master worlds and I am around top notch fighters all the time. I grew up here, moved to San Diego and came back with a wife and young son. My wife is born and raised in socal. Positives There are decent places to get drinks, beer specifically but night life is not going to be the same as a city. Nature is obviously a big draw. You’re a couple hours from the Bay Area, which you can drive to if you miss a city. Since it’s a small place, you may see people frequently. I think it’s a great place to raise kids, if that’s something in the cards for you. Negatives If you’re big on Mexican food, it’s tough out here. Military woman here. I live in the Austin area and there is so much BJJ here. VOW and 10th planet might be worth a look, both have a high female population and 10P does free for military classes 3 times a week (usually small tho). Atos HQ in San Diego has a ton of high level female competitors. source, 2025 ↗

The American model is very different from the rest of the developed world with exception of Canada. If you got to Europe for example there’s massive complexes or adjoining gyms. Often times general fitness on floor and boxing and mats on the other. You see it in alot of other places in the Bay Area and San Diego where rent is simply too high for bjj alone to be feasible. AKA, jocks gym come to mind off the top of my head. The boutique gyms will always be the exception like Caio Terra’s and atos. Every class gets packed there. I think its odd that some bjj schools don't want you to cross train, I think it shows how insecure they are, my brother trains at a 10th planet school in San Diego and they encourage cross training, Eddie Bravo encourages cross training. Unless the schools instructor did something personally messed up to your current coach I don't see the problem. But if you're a coach at your current school I would probably tell your head coach if he's cool with it and don't sneakingly do it behind his back. If he really wants you to get better at bjj and as a coach, he should have no problem. source, 2024 ↗
