Buckhead resident here (39M - married). It’s a good question, and one that I see getting asked more frequently in big cities like NYC and Chicago, as well as smaller regional centers with 100-500k populations. I think the challenge of meeting new people has less to do with the city/town itself and more to do with our society’s recent inability to wander into a “third place” and just shoot the shit with a stranger to the point that you may ask him/her if they wanted to hang out on the weekend. With that said, some places lend themselves more to these types of social interactions than others. source, 2025 ↗

My point isn’t so much about the modern GB business model or cult like practices. Bjj was always a cult, martial arts is for that matter. It’s more to highlight what a powerhouse they were. Roger, Feitosa, Estima Bros, Draculino, Ze Radiola, Romulo, not sure if Renzo was officially GB but you get the idea. They were the Chicago Bulls or Real Madrid. The contrast is so stark. source, 2025 ↗

don’t care if i get downvoted but do not join that one chicago friends discord group. they’re all like robots and their personalities suck literally the most boring group of people i’ve ever talked to. don’t even get me started on the mods lmao they have no control in their everyday lives so they take it to discord to feel like they have some kind of control. it’s just a bunch of losers and outcasts in that discord group. it’s like they’re all scared to speak their minds because they don’t want to hurt each others little feelings. they’re all super sensitive and extremely PC to the point where source, 2024 ↗

That's just a part of it. Some guys will let you work a little bit, some guys won't. One of the guys at my gym, a 2 stripe white belt, routinely smashes the fuck out of me every time we roll. No mercy. Im not mad at it, it's jiu jitsu not a charity. Then there's a blue belt who's built like a linebacker for the Chicago Bears who could no doubt fuck me up in seconds, and he just plays with me like a cat with a mouse. He lets me work while making me work for it, even takes time after the roll to tell me things like " don't leave your arm in here or you'll get arm barred" etc. My point is, both g source, 2024 ↗

I agree with a lot of what you said. My deal with not going to Chicago or similar places is the ol dollar vote. I can do a lot of things in other areas where I CAN carry. That doesnt mean given an opportunity I wont go somewhere like a concert, sporting event, vacation. Being physically fit and keeping your house in order is 100% necessary. Like any other hobby or thing it shouldnt come before the most important things. Your point of taking a kitted out gun to whole foods with a button down being excessive isnt a good one. My edc is a glock 19 with rmr. Its just as easy to throw on a loose source, 2024 ↗

I don't hate Brazilians btw, am I sus of them? Yeah, at least the ones that "haven't made it." I've had countless friends ripped off by non-famous, non-wealthy ones. Hell, one even stole my friends bike in Chicago. This isn't something exclusive to a nation, race, credo, whatever, but in BJJ Brazilians happen to be the people I interact with the most and I've met a lot of them. You're there friend, until a point, but if you're a fellow Brazilian, they'll hide your from police, drive you to the air port, and get your back to Brazil (a nonextradition state). source, 2024 ↗

When I left the MMA gym in Chicago to go to college down state there just so happened to be a jiu jitsu club being ran by a white belt so I had some training partners. I eventually took that over when he graduated and ran the club and had a pretty decent team. After college I started teaching grappling at a few MMA gyms which gave me so good hard training, though learning new things was quite difficult. The reason I taught at these MMA gyms was because I was poor (in grad school at that point) and it was a good way to have access to higher level guys to train with. source, 2024 ↗

I'm not going to explain it, mainly 'cause i'm not well versed enough to do so effectively myself. There are various breakdowns of his techniques online. Some would be easy enough to find on youtube. But i say it should be obvious to see this because it takes more than just weight to win a fight at the highest level. Royce Gracie has proven that. And are you really gonna deny that he is a tremendous wrestler? That there is no technique in his ground game? Lasty - so i don't come off as a Lesnar nuthugger - I seriously dislike this guy and was disappointed when Fedor didn't sign as i was loo source, 2009 ↗
