I was travelling in Melbourne and wanted to get some training in while I was there. I asked the guys at the MMA store what would be a good gym to drop in to. They told me Absolute MMA was good, so I headed over there. I was kind of clueless at the time about drop in etiquette. My home gym was open 24/7 with classes on frequently throughout the day and people were always there rolling or sparring, I assumed all gyms would be the same. I packed up all my gear and got on the train and then had a very long walk to Absolute. There was a heat wave at the time and I was suffering terribly in the he source, 2024 ↗

I was before I joined, and still am now, part of the hardcore punk musical subculture. Moving to Townsville now for six years has completely taken that away from me, the one thing my life has pretty much been structured around from the age of 15 to 29 (when I joined) as there is no scene here. All my friends are in Newcastle, Sydney, Bris/GC or Melbourne but ironically more of them live in the UK or the US due to the nature of the subculture. Good thing I’m moving back to the UK when I get out, plus I’m in the US at least twice a year. I have zero civilian friends in Townsville apart from peop source, 2023 ↗

I grew up on the central coast of California, did 0 wrestling even though we had a good wrestling team. Chuck Liddell was a bouncer at the bars downtown and my friends would try tell me who he was and I had no clue. WEC was taking place all around me and I had no clue. It wasn’t until a decade later when I moved to Melbourne Australia when I started watching UFC that I came across Jiu Jitsu. I was watching it with a friend and I remember the fight ending and I was saying “what even happened”. My friend told me that it was Jiu Jitsu. That’s where my journey started! I got addicted after my 1st source, 2023 ↗

I've told this story a few times on here. Sold real estate in Melbs from the day I left high school until I was 30. My office was on the 11th floor over looking Albert Park Lake. Made stupid money for a young guy with no quals. Had a midlife crises and retrained as a history teacher. During the 4 years I was back at uni I was training and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Turns out an 11 hour a week "full time" uni course is a piece of piss if you've been doing 70 hour weeks for 10 years, so I had quite a bit of time on the mats. Got quite good at it. Entered the teaching world in 2018. source, 2023 ↗

I don’t believe that class structure is unique to John. Lachlan ran a very similar format when I was training in Melbourne and it works great there, even for the hobbiests. In Sydney I use a similar format in my classes at Grappling Education and SJJA and you see the same at Sydney West Martial Arts where I train. I strongly believe that, for the most part, warmups for Jiu Jitsu is just a way for a coach to waste a good chunk of time. source, 2023 ↗

Well, glad I saw this. Im cheap as hell. Also turns out 90% of all our BJJ gear is made out of a factory in Pakistan. Amazon is key here. Elite and Sanabul are good starters. Id also say check out bjj hq. They have cheap daily deals. Ive been training a number of years and figured out that at end of the day, its all the same crap source, 2022 ↗

Where do you live and what are you hobbies? If you're south east and like jiu jitsu, I'll be your friend. I used to try to make friends with the lonely Melbourne people but I found they were the own cause of their lack of friendship. They wouldn't return efforts to hang out and wouldn't take part in activities that create friendships. People claim to want friendship but seem to think that it just happens and you'll wind up with a good friend. You need a reason to spend time together and effort from both people. source, 2020 ↗
