Whoa Judo fees are higher than BJJ in Australia? I feel Judo is the much cheaper one everywhere else source, 2025 ↗

Sydney West Martial Arts, Grappling Education and Sydney Wrestling Academy are some of the higher level gyms in Sydney. Ive heard of some of the other ones mentioned below, movement martial arts, garage jiu jitsu, Mybjj, and Legacy. That pretty much covers the main competing gyms, there are other good guys who compete from other spots but they are usually outliers in their gym. source, 2023 ↗

I had a wonderful time with John of Higher Jiu Jitsu when I visited Sydney right before COVID. Learned a lot from him and it really felt like a model for what a great academy could be. source, 2022 ↗

Personally train at alliance, have been to open sparring, sjja, gracie humaita and higher jiujitsu. Any gym will do if you find the right vibe for you so do some trial classes. Come on down to Alliance source, 2021 ↗

Where do you live/work? The best gym is the one that has a reasonable balance of the kind of training and culture you want as well as being accessible. I train at Higher Jiu Jitsu which is on that list and for an average person wanting to get in shape and learn in a friendly environment I’d says it’s ideal. It’s not a big completion gym though A few hundred meters away you’ve got open sparring which is more comp focused and a few hundred meters further you’ve got Garage who are another friendly gym. source, 2020 ↗

I would recommend Higher Jiu Jitsu in the CBD. They were formally Pedro Sauer, now Gracie Jiu Jitsu so the element of self defense that you are looking for is there. Excellent fundamental instruction. John the head instructor is a beast. I stopped by there in December while I was visiting Sydney and was not disappointed. First class was free. source, 2018 ↗
