There’s a ton of good gyms in Seattle area. Around Lake City there is Mat Chess MMA, good bjj as well as wrestling and Muay Thai. The black belt there is good and a good teacher. Northwest BJJ in Greenwood is a good gym as well, but I’ve never trained there. If you want to drive a bit up north, there is Sleeper Jiu Jitsu, very nice gym with good instruction and a family friendly type atmosphere. Another good gym is Cascade BJJ in the Everett area, a ton of legit good black belts train there. But, for your geographic area Mat Chess would make the most sense as it’s like 10 minutes from Lake Cit source, 2023 ↗

There are a ton of great gyms in the Seattle area. The area's BJJ community is generally pretty great. Try some out, talk to the people on the mats and find the place that feels best for you and your goals. These are some of the gyms I personally recommend: Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy - Brian Johnson is a multiple world champion and has been teaching for a long time so he's got a good number of black belts training in any given day. 10p Seattle, though technically outside of Seattle - Nathan Orchard is a beast and he's been building a killer crew. Ten Kicks up in Bitter Lake, or any other reasonably reputable MMA gym, will prepare you better than about 99% of all spots. I've personally liked them, Mat Chess, and a few others when I've been in the area. Muaythai Iyarin / Renzo Gracie Seattle (they are in the same space if I recall correctly) are also pretty damn good, or used to be. Being able to both strike and grapple is generally better from a self defense perspective (I'd argue) than either one by itself, but a straight kickboxing gym or grappling gym is also probably fine.
