It’s a good question, and one that I see getting asked more frequently in big cities like NYC and Chicago, as well as smaller regional centers with 100-500k populations. I think the challenge of meeting new people has less to do with the city/town itself and more to do with our society’s recent inability to wander into a “third place” and just shoot the shit with a stranger to the point that you may ask him/her if they wanted to hang out on the weekend. We had a proper judo school when I lived in Chicago so I stopped in for some lessons before an upcoming BJJ tournament. I wanted to learn a few throws from my feet if possible. It was awesome, they had these springy floors to land on and people were doing badass throws. They didn't use traditional mats, they had like trampoline-style floors. Once was enough. I had 10 years of Muay Thai and Boxing, 2 years of BJJ, and that was the hardest training I had ever done in my life. Their warmup routines were exhausting before we even go into Judo stuff. Man I have felt a serious kinship with DRose for a long time. Besides also being from Chicago, I tore my ACL about the time he tore his. I was competing a lot in jiu-jitsu and was hyper focused on making that life's trajectory for a long time until I tore my ACL. I was never as good at BJJ as he was at basketball but I'll be damned if he didn't start getting better and then tear his meniscus about the time I tore my other ACL.
