Answering your question >could a bad reputation of one BJJ school negatively impact the entire sport? Yes, but there are 2 factors that affect this. 1. The notoriety of the one school must be very large. For BJJ, it would effectively have to be New Wave, B team, 10 P Head Quarters, and maybe a Gracie Flagship gym. 2. You might want to take some private lessons as without being able to kneel on one leg, unable to straighten your leg fully and having issues curling it will mean you need to focus on different elements of bjj, but there are people who are amputees and compete at a high level. Never considered India, but reading all these comments now it sounds quite interesting to me :) Wonder why nobody mentioned UAE tho bc after figuring this topic out a little bit by myself it looks almost obvious for me to go there a month prior AJP World Pro since I'll go compete there anyway and might as well save money on tickets and train there. Why not both? You said you'll be going to open mats, right? Why not pick 1-3 people around your level that you like and invite them in on the lessons for free? I buy individual classes a lot, and I started getting way more mileage out of them when I started including regular training partners in them. I pay for the lesson, I drive the lesson topics (which my buddies are happy with, as they get free classes) and my teacher gets to alternate formal instruction with occasionally watching my friend and I go live at each other (often semi-live, and usually situational). I've gone training in Brazil 3 times. Each time for 2 week camps with Pedro Sauer. His camp is located in his Pousada (bed&breakfast) in Petropolis, RJ. Which is an hour outside of the city of Rio (just up the mountains.) I usually go in Jan/Feb which is their summer. Rio will sometimes be 110 degrees and Petropolis will stay at like 85. Rio is a pretty crazy place to see, but it is not safe on the same levels we are accustomed to.
